The third edition of Smart City Expo World Congress, held in Barcelona on Nov. 19th till Nov. 21st has closed choosing Rio de Janeiro as the winner of the World Smart City Awards.
The 2013 edition of the contest has been the most international and finally gathered nearly 400 cities and 29 international delegations.The municipal government’s commitment of Rio de Janeiro for a paradigm shift and a radical transformation of the city has earned the recognition of Smart Cities World Awards which were presented last night. The awards jury praised the launch of a long-term project to make the ”carioca” city a reference smart in the southern hemisphere
The Chefe da Casa Civil de Rio de Janeiro , Pedro Paulo , present at the Barcelona event said that it is ” a great honor for us to be rewarded especially here in Barcelona , a great example in this area. Rio is an amazing city, but full of daily challenges. It is significant that we have achieved the award competing with cities like Berlin or Copenhagen. This means that Latin American cities have good experiences to share with the world. “
Among the launched initiatives, they include the new Rio Operations Center (ROC ) from where the local government permanently monitors what happens in the city; the Central 1746 , a platform for online and telephone municipal management; there are other projects as the urban regeneration of the Porto Maravilha and the MaréAnas initiative to develop an integrated transportation system that improves mobility in the favelas of Maré neighborhood .
